Theme & Variation

Assignment for Choreography Class 9/24/08

Part I:

Look at the 2 versions of your choreographic study based on the idea of theme and variation. Examine how the changes you made in the second version, and analyze how these changes made the dance more interesting.
Click on comment for that blog, and write you analysis using vocabulary specific to dance and choreography, considering things like use of space, the design, the rhythmic and tempo variation, energy and flow of the piece.
When you send, please include only your first name, so that I can credit you for your work.

Part II:

Go online and find either:

A short poem that inspires movement
Or
A non-representational painting

Print it out and hand it in to Mr. McLaughlin before you leave.

For extra credit, find both artifacts.

Laura- The use of space of the first clip was in a digaonal and wasnt very useful. The use of space of the second cliip was better because o\everyone was seen in some shape or form and it wasnt a typical shape or form but a clump and all of us just moving around eachother using everyones negative and positive space. the tempo was to everyones beat and not really a specific one. everyone had the counts in their heads but it all depended on how the moved their bodies. the energy as well was strong and firm how you used your body was how you determined your energy.

i feel that my group did not stick to the theme of the dance and i feel that we had some movement it was ok with the movement but just just felt like my group had too many people trying to take charge and so the dance got of the theme

the second time our group did we were more together instead of having so many contrasting themes.we used positive and negative energy.we added a little extra to some of the original movements.

i think that as a group we accomplished a mix up of the original theme. We followed the directions. i do think that we could have played with the spacing a little bit more but over all i think that the group did a good job with this project.

I think our entrance was more interesting but our formation still wasn’t as captivating to the eye. The formation was too predictable and also could have been better in level. Although we did have a lot of good ideas in terms of the variations our location and placement coming from my point of view wasn’t appealing.

I feel that my group made more of an effort to incorperate more of the variation. i feel that we used the rythymn well with the variation. I feel that some of the transitions were awkward. but overall it was a pretty good effort in my eyes

FROM:Fernanda
Ms.Chan I felt like the theme of circles was a very good theme and i liked how we were all able to create our own variations. I noticed that all of the groups seemed to have levels and that the varied in styles. Each group was asked to use the same themes and in different ways. Some groups used the same movements but they created noise while doing it. Or they had Syncronized their piece. I liked how everyone was able to create their own piece given choreography.

to comment on the theme variation i think that the whole class as a whole got the message. We understood the content of what we had to do. We also had good sense of space. We were fully aware of each others space and we knew where to look for each other.

The first time our group did the piece we tried to do it different but moving at the same time. Me and Fernanda tried to do it on a different level as Asia, Celine, and Jordan. The second time we did it I thought was much better because we tried to do it with different levels, use more space but still stay in the same formation, and add more canons to it.

After watching the videos I feel like overall, everyone has improved. People are using different body parts, better transitions, and more sense of technique. Applying corrections and using different movements made the choreographic piece much more interesting because people focused more on how the piece flowed rather than if the dance came out "cute" or not.

So in the first dance of theme and variation our dance didn't connect. It also didn't flow and there wasn't many transitions. Because we didn't use transitions there wasn't any use of space. In the start of the dance we were symmetrical which didn't make the dance intresting at all. But if you see our second dance we started one way and we finished the other way. Our second dance had many levels
simatameously. I overall feel that we refined it to be better dance.

Tiffany 1st Theme and variation:
I think this was way better than the renewed one we've done because our variations had more vitality, both judelle and laura did a retrogade and kristina and both started our variations the same but leveled. Our dance sort of had an ABA form to it because the in the middle of our dance we just did our variation and at the end we ended together at the same time. What could've made it better is if we have done instrumentation to make it more unique. for example some one could use their foot, their shoulder, or their elbow.

Even though I think that our initial dance was good,it lacked the use of the original theme, meaning that we only danced variations on a theme that wasn't presented. As we refined our piece, we found that their were many interesting ways to use the original choreographic theme and varying it in a clear way, with out the dance seeming platonic. we were much more fluid in terms of transitioning from form to form, and we weren't rushed, which made the piece all the better.
